Duncan, Oklahoma is the county seat of Stephens County with a population of close to 23,000. The city has a total area of forty-six square miles. The median income for the area is about 37,000. Duncan, Oklahoma is famous for the Chisholm Trail, which passes through the area. Before the founding of the town in 1892, 9,800,000 cattle were herded up this trail from Texas to Kansas. After an extension of the railroad was built through town, the city was officially founded on June 27, 1892 when the first train arrived. The Rock Island and Pacific Railroad ran from Fort Arbuckle, Kansas to Fort Sill, Texas.

The slogan for the town was once "The Buckle on the Oil Belt." It is also famous as the birthplace of the Halliburton Corp. This company eventually established the New Method Oil Well Cementing Company in 1919. Both companies were known for a new method of cementing wells and making oil production safer and more profitable.

The area, not being very populated does not have a large arts and culture scene. There is a attraction, which is great for families is the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center. This is a museum that shows the history of the famous, previously mentioned, Chisholm Trail. There is a theatre in the area, The Palace Theatre that shows everything from movies to dance recitals and plays. There are also several golf and country clubs in the area, Twin Oaks Golf Club, The Territory Golf and Country Club, and the Duncan Golf and Country Club.

There are two venues for culture in town besides the aforementioned, is the Stephens County Fair Grounds. The usually rural events are held there, rodeos, carnivals etc. The town does have a bowling alley and roller skating rink.

There is a Holiday Inn located in Duncan and several casual dining restaurants such as Carl's. Along with the usual fast food, type places such as McDonalds and Pizza hut. There also are a few Mexican Restaurants located on Main Street.

The major industries in the area are farming (wheat, cattle), oil and natural gas. There also are some manufacturing plants that make everything from building supplies, plumbing supplies to generalized machine shops. There are a few banks in the area but finance does not make any kind of an impact on the employment of the area. Mostly the population works in farming or manufacturing. Of course all the restaurants and shops (retail) in the area are employers also but the area has very few of either.
